So what's the average American to do? As I shared with Larry the other night, now is the time to put together your Family Financial Battle Plan for 2009. This is something my own Dad did with us back during the last recession of the '70s.
Sit down as a family and together go through all your expenses and come up with a plan on how you can cut back. Right now the fight to keep more of your hard earned paycheck is greater than it's ever been before. Think about it. We live in a world now where both big business and even once-respectable institutions like banks and brokerage houses, insurance companies and hospitals, no longer seem to have any scruples about how they accomplish the task of separating us from our money. I'm not talking about a straight increase in prices either. I'm talking about service fees, surcharges, gimmicks--all the sneaky ways of charging us more. Whether or not we let them get away with doing business this way, will ultimately make a huge difference on our financial futures and in the way we live our lives.
When creating your 2009 Family Financial Battle Plan, you're going to answer three questions:
1. What can we, as a family, give up for now? Keep in mind, this is not forever, it's just for now.
2. What can we cut back on by renegotiating? Everything right now in a recession is renegotiatiable but no company out there is going to be willing to lower your fees, charge you less, or cut a deal--UNLESS you ASK, and in some cases demand.
3. How can we renegotiate better deals? It's actually easier than you think. Spending just a few hours of your time educating yourself on how major corporations take advantage of you (legally), and then taking action to fight back will ultimately put hundreds, if not thousands of dollars back in your pocket each year.
